Mr. Don McGarry |
![]() |
Don was born in Baltimore, Maryland and didn't take up the banjo until well after his career was over. He served in the U.S. Navy and after he was discharged worked in the construction business for 35 years. Over the last 10 of those years Don had his own construction firm and built about 25,000 homes, garden apartments, high rises, and numerous commercial projects. He was at a party in Philadelphia at a relatives house where he heard someone playing the banjo and realized that it would be a great diversion after so many years of work. He bought himself a banjo and started taking lessons. He moved to Sarasota after retiring in 1990 and built his last house, the one he now lives in with his wife Gayle.Don joined the Banjo society about 3 years ago and this was actually his first time playing with a band. He is one of our star vocalists and his smooth crooning tenor voice always leaves you wanting more.Don also plays with the Shriner's Banjo Band and the Suncoast Mummers String Band. He is a member of The American Legion, Mensa, the Masons and Shriners |
