Ken was born a very young man in New York City. Yonkers to be exact, but you would never know by his accent. After highschool he attended Cornell University and received a B.S. Degree. Then came the war! As did so many of our members Ken enlisted in the Navy ( the U.S. Navy!) and entered the V5 flight program. He took flight training at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn, Ny and then flew to Atlanta and finally to Pensacola, Florida. Ken was assigned to fly an open cockpit biplane. It was in Pensacola where he met his wife and after some years of marriage they had 2 beautiful daughters and three grand children. Ladies, Ken is now a single divorced man and on the prowel! |
After being discharged from the Navy at the end of WWII he attended Brimingham Law school. Ken passed all the required classes and tests and was admitted to the Birmingham Bar Association. And on occasion he was admitted to a few Birmingham Bars as well.Ken worked for 25 years with the USF&G Corp. and found himself incharge of the Ft. Myers Branch office. He decided it was time to take a rest so he took early retirement. Shortly after retiring Ken realized that just siting around was not for him so he purchased the Ft. Myers Insurance Agency, Ken worked there for quite a while and then in 2000 he decided , "that's it, I'm done working!" so he sold the business and retired.Ken has been a member of the Ft. Myers Rotary Club and was Treasurer for a time. During this period he started playing Tenor Banjo with the Ft. Myers Rebels Band, the Bonita Village Band, the "Bill Porter Group" band, the "Fun With Music" band and the "Gulf Coast Banjo Society". His love of the banjo started as a teenager when he played along with his uncle who at the time played guitar..Ken is a fishing enthusiast and a self proclaimed "health nut". He keeps physically fit by exercising regularly, swimming, gardening, chasing the occasional beauty, and Jitterbugging as often as he gets the chance.Ken is one of our vocalists and his song and voice are always appreciated by both the audience and the rest of the band. Thanks Ken your an asset to the Gulf Coast Banjo Society.
Webmaster's note: Ken was one of the finest people I have ever met. He was always happy, and so throughly enjoyed playing with the Banjo Society. His own singing style was one of his most endeering traits, and he was a prettty good banjo player as well. At the point in his life when he should have been sitting down tuning his banjo before a show, he was always the first one to offer assistance when setting up the sound system, or helping the drummer carry his equipment to the stage. Ken loved to sing and some of his favorite songs were " All Of Me" and "Dream". He will be missed by all the members of the Gulf Coast Banjo Society, but this writer will miss him more than most. This writers only complaint is that I didn't know him for a longer time. God Bless you Ken, someday I hope we will all play in the same band again... you were the best.............jw |
